Expressing Suggestion

(Memberikan Saran)

1. Pengertian Expressing Suggestion

Expressing Suggestion adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk memberikan saran atau nasihat kepada seseorang.

Contoh:

• You look tired. You should take a rest.
  Kamu terlihat lelah. Kamu sebaiknya beristirahat.
• I have a headache. You should see a doctor.
  Saya sakit kepala. Kamu sebaiknya pergi ke dokter.

 

2. Ungkapan untuk Memberikan Saran

A. Should + Verb 1

Artinya: sebaiknya / seharusnya

Rumus:

Subject + should + Verb 1

Contoh:

• You should study harder.
  Kamu sebaiknya belajar lebih giat.
• She should drink more water.
  Dia sebaiknya minum lebih banyak air.
• We should clean the classroom.
  Kita sebaiknya membersihkan kelas.

 

B. Shouldn't + Verb 1

Artinya: sebaiknya tidak

Contoh:

• You shouldn't eat too much candy.
  Kamu sebaiknya tidak makan terlalu banyak permen.
• You shouldn't sleep too late.
  Kamu sebaiknya tidak tidur terlalu larut.
• We shouldn't make noise in the library.
  Kita sebaiknya tidak membuat keributan di perpustakaan.

 

3. Why don't you + Verb 1...?

Artinya: Mengapa kamu tidak...?

Digunakan untuk memberikan saran dengan cara yang lebih santai.

Contoh:

• Why don't you take a rest?
  Mengapa kamu tidak beristirahat?
• Why don't you study together?
  Mengapa kamu tidak belajar bersama?
• Why don't you ask your teacher?
  Mengapa kamu tidak bertanya kepada gurumu?

 

4. How about + Verb-ing...?

Artinya: Bagaimana kalau...?

Contoh:

• How about going to the library?
  Bagaimana kalau pergi ke perpustakaan?
• How about studying together?
  Bagaimana kalau belajar bersama?
• How about playing football?
  Bagaimana kalau bermain sepak bola?

Ingat: Setelah How about gunakan Verb-ing.

❌ How about go to the library?
✅ How about going to the library?

 

5. What about + Verb-ing...?

Artinya juga Bagaimana kalau...?

Contoh:

• What about watching a movie?
  Bagaimana kalau menonton film?
• What about having lunch together?
  Bagaimana kalau makan siang bersama?
• What about going by bus?
  Bagaimana kalau pergi naik bus?

6. Let's + Verb 1

Artinya: Mari kita...

Contoh:

• Let's study together.
  Mari kita belajar bersama.
• Let's clean the classroom.
  Mari kita membersihkan kelas.
• Let's go to the library.
  Mari kita pergi ke perpustakaan.

 

7. Asking for Suggestion

Selain memberikan saran, kita juga dapat meminta saran.

Ungkapan yang digunakan:

What should I do?
Apa yang harus saya lakukan?

What do you suggest?
Apa saranmu?

Do you have any suggestions?
Apakah kamu punya saran?

Can you give me some advice?
Bisakah kamu memberi saya nasihat?

Contoh Dialog

Andi: I have a problem. I don't understand English.
Saya punya masalah. Saya tidak mengerti bahasa Inggris.

Budi: What should you do?
Apa yang harus kamu lakukan?

Andi: I don't know.

Budi: You should study English every day.
Kamu sebaiknya belajar bahasa Inggris setiap hari.

Andi: That's a good idea. Thank you.
Itu ide yang bagus. Terima kasih.

 

8. Responding to a Suggestion

Menerima saran

• That's a good idea.
  Itu ide yang bagus.
• Good idea!
  Ide bagus!
• That sounds great.
  Kedengarannya bagus.
• Thank you for your suggestion.
  Terima kasih atas sarannya.
• I agree with you.
  Saya setuju denganmu.

 

 

Menolak saran dengan sopan

• I'm not sure about that.
  Saya kurang yakin dengan itu.
• I don't think that's a good idea.
  Saya rasa itu bukan ide yang bagus.
• Maybe next time.
  Mungkin lain kali.
